Christianity and Pagan Mystery Cults

There have been many arguments over the last century related to how ancient Christianity borrowed (or “ripped off”) such-and-such concept from such-and-such pagan, mystery religion or from such-and-such Egyptian/Greek/Persian cult.

With the advent of the Internet — the brain child of the venerable Al Gore (j/k) — this has become more and more popular. Everyone and their dog quotes a website or Wikipedia where it claims that the resurrection of Jesus is just like this cult or this pagan deity, and as a result, not unique and nothing special. Just another run-of-the-mill mystery religion/cult with similar themes, legends and myths.

While many of these stories and assertions are flat-out made up, there are certainly some stories and myths that bear — on first reading — a resemblance to the “story” of Christianity and of Jesus Christ specifically.
